The mere thought that we are not alone in the Universe is both fascinating and frightening. Some still believe that we, as the only intelligent form we know in our Solar system, are the only creatures to have wondered about the mysteries and the nature of the Universe.
This belief fades when we consider the fact that in our galaxy alone, there are hundreds of billions other stars with probably that many stars around them. So, the question is: What will happen if we do discover other alien civilizations? To be more exact – 234 of them!
Two astronomers from the Laval University in Quebec claim that they have found 234 alien civilizations.
Ermanno Borra, together with his graduate student Eric Trottier, came to this knowledge by observing and analyzing over 2.5 million stars and galaxies. They were looking for a periodic signal in the stars that would follow some kind of intelligent pattern that is difficult to happen naturally. This pattern would be a proof for alien life.
They discovered a pattern of emitting pulses of light at regular intervals in 234 stars similar to our Sun in size. Borra and Trottier firmly believe that aliens are emitting those signals.
The researchers broke down the light signal by using a mathematical tool called the Fourier Transform (FT). This tool decomposes the elements of a signal. For instance, if the light is a cocktail, by using this tool you’ll get the recipe.
After analyzing the results from the FT, they found that there are periodic modulated components of light happening in 234 out of 2.5 million stars. This is due to extra fast light pulses (1.64 and 1.67 picoseconds) which, according to them, are operated by aliens.
In their paper, they disclaim any possible explanation for this, such as rotational transitions in molecules, Fourier transform of spectral lines, and rapid pulsation of stars. The only possible explanation they offer is – alien civilization.
“We find that the detected signals have exactly the shape of an ETI signal predicted in the previous publication and are therefore in agreement with this hypothesis,” the researchers wrote in their paper. “The fact that they are only found in a very small fraction of stars within a narrow spectral range centered near the spectral type of the Sun is also in agreement with the ETI hypothesis.”
However, in his previous paper, Borra has said that this area of the astronomy is the least explored, so one might ask: Why do aliens then choose this complicated and energy-consuming form of communication?
The Stephen Hawking-backed project will further investigate these 234 stars; however, UC Berkeley’s team says we should remain skeptical on this subject.
“The one in 10,000 objects with unusual spectra seen by Borra and Trottier are certainly worthy of additional study. However, extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. It is too early to unequivocally attribute these purported signals to the activities of extraterrestrial civilizations,” they said.
